All our birds are fed and raised on Certified Organic Grain and homegrown green feed. This diet is supplemented with vitamin rich seaweed and other natural products. Boyup Chook birds are raised in open range conditions on our organically managed property and we recommend that they be kept in this type of environment to achieve the best results for a long and productive life.

We take pride in rearing birds from carefully selected bloodlines, and in managing our stock and property on biodynamic agricultural principles. This means that we are committed to developing a healthy, living, soil structure and to producing healthy plants and animals through sustainable farming. Selecting our chickens to supply your poultry requirements will guarantee the beginning of a happy and healthy household flock. Please come and visit us.
The Chooks
Barnevelder:
A heavy, soft feathered Dutch breed originating from Orpington, Cochin, Brama and Langshan stock in the village of Barneveld. The breed was further developed by British show breeders in the 20th century. It is possible that the Australian varieties may also have some Indian Game or Wyandotte ancestors. These chooks are very hardy and thrive in all conditions whilst being consistent producers of big dark brown eggs. They are also a very nice table bird, weighing in at 2 to 2.5 Kg dressed.
Australorp:

This large, Aussie bred, easygoing chook is related to the British Black Orpington and has a bit of Langshan in it. These blokes are ideal dinner guests that dress at a tender 3 Kg, have very friendly manners, great curiosity and a huge appetite for bugs and the garden plants they live on. Also good layers of brown eggs.

   Leghorn/Crossbreds:

These small, feisty latin blond chics were imported from Italy into America in the late 19th century where they were bred in many colours and comb types. Thence to Britain and infused with White Rock, Malay and Minorca producing a larger bird. The Australian variety is a blend of both, focusing on it’s mammoth egglaying capacity. The most important Aussie invention is the Leghorn/Australorp hybrid cross that has an even greater production record.

Bantam:

There are many! Ours are mostly Buff Pekins with feathered feet. Some have Silky Bantam lines. They lay small eggs and get clucky a lot with a high hatching rate and are protective mothers. We use them to hatch our other chook eggs. Kids love them as pets as they are very tame.
